A Man and His Music
Ever since I laid my small, bony phalanges on the ivory keys of an elegant Steinway in the May of 2011, music has kept its trance on me. Now, I do not play as much piano; I have shifted my attention towards Choral and Jazz singing. In the beginning of my choir career in middle school, I was still a shy kid, scared to sound louder than the rest. This sentiment ensued much until Junior year. Realizing my potential from the amassing encouragement from my peers, I acted. I joined the Haslett Men's Chorale-- an extracurricular choir meeting on Monday and Wednesday nights. It consisted of 55 guys, ranging from freshman to senior. This is my second year participating in the Men's Chorale, and have improved leaps and bounds as a singer. This year, I participated in three ensembles: Chorale, Men's Chorale, and Little Men's Chorale (elite ensemble consisting of a small group of guys from Men's). As well, it was the direction of Steve Martin that too helped me realize my potential and took my singing to the next level. He was a graduate student, now professional opera singer, at MSU that served as my voice teacher this year. If I were to travel back to 2012, freshman year, and tell myself that music would soon play a major role in my life, I would most likely awkwardly laugh and say that I would never get good enough to truly appreciate music's prowess. Oh, how I was wrong.
